Indica House is situated at the lower part of the property closer to the ocean and has a soaking bath tub.
Sativa House is situation at the top side of the property, so has slightly better elevated views from the second floor, and has a walk-in shower and EV charger. -
I have built two luxury hempcrete holiday houses on the same site in Alonnah.
The near-identical homes are positioned about 10m apart, with Sativa House sitting at the top of the property behind Indica House, slightly off-set so it still has ocean views. The units have a shared driveway, and each home has its own dedicated car parking space. While orientated and designed for maximum privacy, with blinds you can pull closed if you desire, and no common areas, there could be guests staying at the other house during your visit. This means you might see folks coming and going from their own totally separate accommodation at the same time as your stay.
The other very important thing to note is that both queen beds are located upstairs, and the bathroom and toilet is on ground level. These areas are only accessible by a timber staircase, and while we leave a few nightlights, this may not suit guests who need to use the facilities through the night, or who have mobility issues.
The bedrooms are completely visually private with lockable sliding doors, however they ARE NOT completely soundproofed from each other. The dividing walls have an open slatted timber section at the top, and neither bedroom has light-blocking black-out blinds. A non-soundproof bedroom with natural light may not be appropriate depending on who you're traveling with, so if someone in your party is a light sleeper or snorer, please note I provide ear plugs, and encourage light-sensitive folks to pack a sleep mask.
If you have a larger group with a guest who requires the sofa bed in the lounge, be aware that this is a floor-level pull-out futon style best suited to younger visitors. In my experience, this bedding option is not ideal for folks who need a proper mattress for a deep and comfortable night's sleep, or for people who have difficulty getting up off the floor. While I have slept on this sofa bed many times, it is not great for me as a 48-year old person with a slightly dodgy lower back! My younger friends and teenage nieces and nephews have all told me they reckon this extra bedding option is fine for them.
If you are a single traveler or couple; on a non-romantic get-away traveling with close family or friends; are a deep sleeper, or are a light sleeper who is used to using an eye mask and/or ear plugs, I’m sure you will enjoy one of the most comfortable nights of your life.
Those in the queen beds will be sleeping between the beautiful hemp bed linen and atop the locally handmade premium AH Beard mattress… I enjoy the best sleep of my life when I stay at the Tassie Hempcrete Houses 😊 -
While I do my best to check email and the Airbnb app daily, I also work very long hours running my business X-Hemp, which is the only fibre processing mill in Tasmania.
There are often days when I am in long meetings, at industry conferences, or out of mobile range on farms. So if you do send me a note here, please be a little patient, and know that I will usually reply within 24 hours between 6am-6pm AEDT.
If you make a booking, during your stay, you will also have my mobile phone number and a local contact to assist in the unlikely event that there are any problems. I do ask all guests to remember that even with modern technology, you are about to travel to a beautiful remote island, off another island, at the end of the world!
Because the car ferry does not run overnight, there are no plumbers or electricians who can arrive immediately in the unlikely instance that there is an issue in those areas. There are no shops, bars or food outlets on the island that stay open late, and there is definitely no room service (yes, I did have a guest call me at 10pm to ask this question).
If you prefer to have a holiday in accommodation that is staffed by employees to answer questions 24 hours a day like you would find in a hotel, please understand that the Tassie Hempcrete Houses are run by an individual human (me) in a remote location (Bruny), and may not be the right fit for you or members of your group.
The most important thing is that you are staying in a place where you feel happy and comfortable 🙂

Bruny Island can only be reached by car ferry. There is no public transport and you must have your own vehicle.
Bruny Island is long and thin, running north to south down the coast of the area south of Hobart. The island forms the d’Entrecasteaux Channel between itself and the Tasmanian mainland.
The Ferry Service leaves from the town of Kettering on mainland Tasmania and arrives at Roberts Point on Bruny Island.
The ferry operates on a queuing system, and the island is VERY popular with visitors, so please be prepared for a potentially lengthy wait (sometimes for several hours in peak times and season), even with an online pre-purchased ticket. There are lots of locals who use the ferry to take kids to school and themselves to work, so please be respectful, and wait your turn to board the boat e.g. no queue jumping.
While the timetable varies depending on whether it is summer or winter, the ferries generally run every 20-30 minutes and the trip on the water takes around 20 minutes. While it is a short and safe trip, the ocean can get a little rough, so be prepared for a sometimes bumpy ride! On VERY rare occasions, the ferry service will be suspended if the sea is too rough or wind too high, so keep an eye on the weather forecast if you’re in a hurry to arrive or depart to reduce chances of inconvenience.
When you board the ferry, you MUST stay in your vehicle until the boat starts moving. After the ferry starts moving, you can freely walk around and enjoy the fresh sea air and amazing views. The return ticket price for a standard vehicle (less than 6m long) is currently AUD $55.80 and can be pre-paid or paid at the Kettering toll booth. Check out the current timetable and pricing here (concession prices available): www.sealink.com.au/bruny-island
There is only one road leading south from the ferry to the Tassie Hempcrete Houses and the drive usually takes around 45 minutes. You will take the B66 road and drive through The Neck (the thin isthmus joining North and South Bruny where there is a car park for the look-out), then past the Adventure Bay turnoff, then past Simpsons Bay before arriving at the tiny town of Alonnah. When you have passed the school and cricket oval on your left, and can see the ocean, it is time to make a hard right onto Jack Dwyer Drive then continue up and around on to Harvey Road.
You will find 53 Harvey Road located on the left side, with a large rusted metal sign on the roadside.
Check-In time will be after 3pm and Check-Out time is 11am. While our cleaners generally rely on having the full four hours between your departure and new guests arriving, alternate Check-In and Check-Out times may be possible on request.
Please just ask if you'd like to arrive or depart a little later and I will always accommodate if I can.

During your visit, you can fill your time discovering this magnificent place of natural beauty, resting and relaxing in the serene comfort of the hempcrete house, or enjoy a combination of both!
For the more adventurous with a little bit of spending money, the Pennicott Wilderness Boat Tour should not be missed, especially if you love the ocean and are interested in marine creatures. You can also see Bruny from the air on a relatively affordable scenic flight, and can Google each of these suggestions for more info and booking details.
Alternatively, you can keep your boots on the ground and money in your pocket by hanging out on the beautiful clean beaches, or enjoying any one of the stunning hikes with knock-your-socks-off views, including the stepped walk up to ‘The Truganini’ lookout. Two of the ‘60 Great Short Walks’ in Tasmania are on Bruny Island or you could do the Bruny Lighthouse Tour.
So whether it is outdoor adventuring; drinking cocktails made with our complimentary hemp spirits from the bar cart while watching the sun set over the ocean; or snuggled in sipping a hot cuppa or sparkling rain water from the SodaStream while napping, reading, playing games or watching TV, I am sure you are going to love this place as much as I do.

The only general store on Bruny Island is located at Adventure Bay which is a scenic 20 minute drive away from the Tassie Hempcrete Houses. This is the only place to get petrol on the island, so it is best to fill up your tank before you leave mainland Tasmania at the Kettering Ferry.
If you're wanting to avoid the extra driving on narrow windy roads (especially after dusk when the chances of hitting wildlife is very high), we encourage you to bring all your food supplies from mainland Tasmania so you can simply relax.
If you’d like some delicious locally sourced Bruny Island produce to be delivered to the Tassie Hempcrete Houses, contact Jessica Maybus prior to or during your stay to order one of her divine breakfast or picnic hampers. 0409 417 460 or via her website hamperliciousonbruny.com.au (mention to Jess that I recommended the service which is a fantastic little local business).
If you love fresh or cooked oysters and smoked produce, do not miss Get Shucked Oysters on the road from the ferry. You can stop at this awesome business and enjoy the view, or be like a local and take advantage of the drive-through option! Other recommendations are the Bruny Island Winery (lunch and dinner certain nights); the award winning Cheese and Beer Co; the Chocolate shop; and Bruny Honey (the ice cream is divine).
Hotel Bruny is the only pub on the island, and is less than one kilometre away from the Tassie Hempcrete Houses, accessible via a really lovely and easy 15-min walk along the beach.
The pub is the best place for meals and drinks, and they also offer the only bottle shop on the island and a takeaway menu as well (bookings are essential for lunch and dinner). The food at the pub is reliably yummy, and there is a pool table and occasional live music.
Regardless of how busy it is, there is always a great atmosphere at the pub, with a mixed bag of interesting visitors and locals usually perched at the bar or on the outside table looking out at the ocean (including me whenever I’m on the island) www.hotelbruny.com.au
One of the quirkiest things on Bruny Island are the two bread fridges which rely entirely on an honesty system for payment (cash or bank transfer). They are filled a couple of times a day by the local baker John who prepares fresh bread, biscuits and other delicious treats.
You can’t miss them as you will pass them on the right on the way to Alonnah (if you do want to buy some delicious baked goods from the fridges, just be careful to pull completely off the main road as it gets busy).

Bruny Island has only one general store located at Adventure Bay, about 20 mins drive from the Tassie Hempcrete Houses on a winding road.
The IGA is usually open 8am - 6pm seven days a week, and sells nearly everything, including coffee, fresh takeaways, clothing, souvenirs, newspapers, grocery items, hardware and fishing gear. Petrol is only available at Adventure Bay, so best to fill up before you leave on the ferry at Kettering.
Island prices are always a little more expensive, and shopping options can be limited with unexpected closures, so if you want to be fully prepared or are on a tighter budget, I encourage you to consider buying all your supplies prior to leaving on the ferry in either Hobart, Kingston, Margate, Cygnet or Snug.
As previously mentioned, I highly recommend Hotel Bruny (the pub) for delicious dine-in and takeaway food. This venue is the island's only bottle shop (liquor store) and also sells ice-creams, chocolate and chips for those late night cravings!
Hotel Bruny opens at 12pm every day of the week for lunch and dinner, and as it is the only place on the island trading seven days, it is busy, and meal reservations are strongly recommended. Superb seasonal menu, a pool table, jukebox and a lovely family friendly vibe. You can book online here: www.hotelbruny.com.au
You can get to the pub by an easy walk along the beach or the road if you want to leave the car at home to enjoy a few drinks and not worry about hitting wildlife. Simply turn left out of 53 Harvey Road, left down Ritchie Street and you’ll see the sign for ‘Sheepwash Track’. Turn left along the track, past the jetty and boat ramp and on the Alonnah Beach.
While the ocean is chilly, if the weather has been calm, the water is usually crystal clear and beautifully clean. If you follow normal water safety protocol (namely swimming with a buddy and supervising children actively), Alonnah Beach is very safe should you want to swim. In warmer months, I swim near-daily at this beach with my dog Astro, and will often have a quick dip when walking back to Harvey Road after dinner at the pub.

Bruny Island is not connected to town water or sewerage services.
Luckily, the water from the faucet is perfectly safe and enjoyable to drink as it is beautifully fresh and clean rain water collected off our roof and stored in our on-site tanks.
You are more than welcome to enjoy a shower or bath, and to use the dishwasher and washing machine as normal. I simply ask you to be a little more mindful of usage as this resource comes from the sky, so don’t leave taps running if you are not using the water.
Please flush ONLY toilet paper and natural waste down the toilet, and absolutely NO diapers/nappies, feminine hygiene products and wet wipes (there are bins provided for these products).
Our onsite wastewater treatment system protects our precious waterways, and local businesses like Get Shucked Oysters and the beautiful marine wildlife rely on all of us to do the right thing, so please be mindful of this aspect.
If you are washing clothes, please place one of the provided SKIPPER laundry sheets directly into the drum of the machine with the load (this eco-friendly product does NOT go in the drawer like a laundry powder).
While we have a combination washer/dryer, it is sometimes quicker to hang clothes to dry on the rack that you’ll find in the upstairs storage cupboard to the right of the stairs.
The reverse cycle split system air conditioner in the living room is for heating and cooling. Use the remote control, located in a cradle near the staircase, to turn on/off and adjust the settings.
The sunshine icon is for heating and the snowflake icon for cooling. Slide down the front cover of the remote and use the mode setting on the remote to change the setting.
One of the many joys of the building material hempcrete is the efficient insulating qualities. If you keep the doors and windows closed, the room temperature usually sits at a comfortable 16-18 degrees year round, without mechanical heating or cooling.
If you do like fresh air and want to open the doors and windows, that is great, however please keep the screens closed to reduce flies and mosquitoes from entering the property. If you need it, there is insect killer and repellent available too.
You will notice a section in the living room that has deliberately been left unrendered, so you can see the way the hempcrete is layered inside the wall.
There is also a book about hempcrete building available for you to read if you are keen to know more about this eco-friendly building material. The walls of the Tassie Hempcrete Houses and the mulch on the garden is all locally grown hemp fibre from X-Hemp, a company I founded in 2020.X-Hemp is located in the Northern Midlands of Tasmania in a little town called. Cressy. We are the first and only mill processing hemp fibre in our state, and the only majority female-owned and 100% women-operated business of this type in the world.
I encourage any of you who are interested to follow X-Hemp on our socials, or contact the Tasmanian Hemp Association if you’d like to learn more about this exciting industry. While we want you to relax and have fun, the property has a strict no-smoking or parties policy.
Please be mindful of the surrounding residents, and should the property be left in an unacceptable condition, additional cleaning will be charged. Additionally, should any damage be done, this will also be charged back to you. -
For your enjoyment and convenience, I provide a range of standard pantry staples.
You do NOT need to pack or purchase the following supplies:
Salt and pepper, olive oil, hemp oil, balsamic vinegar, red wine vinegar, soy sauce, tomato sauce (ketchup), hot sauce (Sriracha), mustard (American), mayonnaise, T2 loose leaf teas (black, green, peppermint) , ground Vittoria plunger coffee, organic raw sugar, popping corn.
I leave a couple of small long life milks (full cream dairy and one or two plant-based options) for an emergency cuppa on arrival too.
For those who like an alcoholic tipple, please enjoy a splash or two of complimentary hemp spirits from the New Norfolk Distillery. We usually have hemp gin, hemp rum and hemp vodka for you to try.
I provide a small selection of mini-mixers in the fridge so you can see which combination you like (orange juice, Coca-Cola, tonic water, ginger beer).
The ice trays are usually stocked and we have a SodaStream in the bar cart for lovers of sparkling water.
In addition to the usual plates, glassware, cutlery, pots and pans, all guests have access to an extremely well equipped kitchen, and do NOT need to pack the following:
Chopsticks, oyster forks, NutriBullet, sandwich press, lemon juicer, teapot, French press, cocktail shaker, ice bucket, oven trays, GladWrap, tin foil and baking paper.
I have included lots of hemp products in this accommodation, including hemp seed (good sprinkled on salads), hemp protein (great in smoothies) and hemp oil (use interchangeably or mixed with olive oil, including on skin).
Hemp seeds are SO good for us. They offer a complete protein (all essential amino acids), heart-healthy fats (one of the only plant-based sources of Omega-3 and 6), fibre, and crucial minerals like magnesium, iron, and zinc. All of these components support everything from heart health and digestion, to skin vitality and hormone balance.
Even better, all hemp food products supplied are locally grown, processed and packaged in Tasmania.
The beautiful bathroom products have been made in Australia by the Margaret River Hemp Company. The bath towels are made from another eco-friendly natural fibre (bamboo).

Sometimes the Internet connection can be patchy, as it is connected via satellite rather than standard NBN.
Please be understanding of this, and if by chance Netflix or your preferred streaming service is not connecting, or the speed is not fast enough, I have playing cards and a variety of board games to keep you entertained in the cabinet under the TV.
I also provide a Bluetooth speaker for you to connect to and play your own music.
